[ARC5] B-17 Crash Near Hartford CT

Well, I think that “better maintained than most airliners” is a push!  Commercial aviation has a good safety record, and airlines have access to plenty of supply of new and zero time parts,  modern maintenance processes and better designed aircraft.

Try to maintain a 40+ year aircraft and will find out that parts are hard to come by and expertise as well.  

An aircraft should not crash when an engine goes bad. Few questions come to mind: was it refueled with 100LL or Jet fuel by mistake? Was the pilot capable to manage an emergency? What else we do not know.

I fly a twin few times a week, and I religiously review the engine failure checklist every time.  I know that there is portion of my takeoff that can lead to disaster, if an engine fails and if I am not on top 100%!  

I am concerned about a possible overreaction of the FAA to this crash.  My understanding is that the FAA and USAF do not want any warbirds flying, and they may use this opportunity to tight the screws.

Anyone remember the sad story of the B-29 Kee Bird that was lost right after restoration due to a loose APU in the tail?  

I can still picture those guys sitting there watching it burn to the ground after putting in so many man hours to get it flying again.....sigh...

Did it carry a CVR and black box? It may be months before a definitive NTSB report is available. 
   One news report stated it crashed into a de-icing facility.
