    This is true but also keep in mind that running an 
incandescent lamp continuously also results in longer life. Same 
is true for vacuum tubes. The stress at turn on especially but 
also turn off shortens the life. Often long service lamps are 
used in places where they run continuously which can account for 
part of the longer life. You may have noticed that most of the 
time when a lamp fails it does so at turn on.
