A while back I bought a BC-348N on ebay and was surprised that I got it for only about $50; no one else bid. Turned out that the set had been minimally hacked, with even the dial light rehostat and phone plug covers intact. The exact design in the Surplus Conversion handbook had been used, with both a choke and a filter cap, mounted on the old dynamotor plate. A couple of holes had been cut in the outer case and covered with copper screen wire.
Since it had a power cord I took a chance and plugged it in. It worked quite well. I replaced the dynamotor plate with piece of 1/8 inch thick AL sheet and rebuilt the power supply with modern, larger, caps but retained the choke. Since the conversion called for a 300VAC transformer that gave about 250VDC B+ I added power resistors in the AC line and B+ line to get it down to about 200VDC. B+ current is about 60ma.
It works fine, without ever touching anything inside. So I would power up a BC-348 that I was going to work on and just see what it does, first, after doing an inspection and accomplishing any cleaning required.
My latest is a BC-348R that cost $10 at a hamfest. It has no outer case and needs some TLC but seems to be totally original. I swapped the case off another BC-348R, since I have a blown Radio Shack speaker with a nice cabinet I think will work for that one.
Happy New Year, everybody!
