And one of the dots will usually tell you whether the dielectric is paper or mica.

Generally , it's easy to tell the difference even though the molded paper and mica LOOK similar. The paper ones are higher value such as .01, .02, .05, or .1 uf , etc
They are used in bypass and coupling functions.
Micas are generally in the picofarad range or maybe as high as .001 uf , used in the RF/ IF areas . They are physically much smaller that than the paper types.
You can also read the dots to quick check the multiplier.
