On the Smithsonian Channel "Air Disasters" series they described a VARIG airline 737 that was headed to an airport at night on the north coast of Brazil from the interior. Arriving near the supposed location they could neither receive the VOR not get ATC on VHF. They finally got communications with their destination on HF. They tried using ADF, tuned in a station, and followed the needle off into the jungle where they ran out of fuel and crashed. Turned out that they had misread the flight plan course of 27.0 Degrees as 270 degrees and ended up 300 miles off course. And they had not verified that the AM radio station they tuned in on with the ADF was anywhere near their destination. Had to be the right station, since the signal was so strong, and besides, the big soccer game with Chile was on!
