There is a "pragmatic" way to enjoy using the
ARC-2 despite the "barn-door" selectivity. If it
gets to be a problem, turn on the "Low Freq.
Receiver" switch and hook an external receiver to
the little antenna post provided. On CW, an audio
filter will help. Just don't go real narrow as it
will make tuning difficult. 500 Hz should be
workable.
"To each their own," of course; everyone has their
preference. Doofussed-around with the ARC-2 (not
the 2A) several years ago. The only change I
found worth doing, IMHO, was increasing the value
of the BFO injection capacitor. It really helped
CW and SSB reception a lot. After several "close
calls" with the fragile, easily-melted wiring in
the IF stages, concluded that the change "costs
more than it comes to," and abandoned the effort.
On our local AM nets, most of the guys have strong
signals and the verminous SS-SOBs are usually just
an annoyance. Decided to "enjoy the Model T Ford
for being a Model T" and not try to make it into a
Mustang (take that, Ford haters. Friends don't
let friends drive Chevys. :-D ).
Work beckons, as does the coffee pot. Morning,
all.
