I think that may have been a tongue-in-cheek comment based on some of
the other past speculation. Like, we all know the air force has her
hidden with the Roswell aliens. The spying theory was offered to
support her having been captured by the Japanese as an alternative
explanation to running out of fuel and crashing. Doubtful there
would've been any amount of coverage of her journey if the aircraft
had been modified, as newsreel footage or innocent photos could've
easily exposed modifications to the aircraft.
