If it were a spy mission why the leg from New Guinea to Howland Island?
There is nothing there. And Howland Island was basically uninhabited. Still
is.

What is the source of the information that she was on a spy
mission? I have heard this before as speculation but am unaware
of anything definite. There has been so much speculation and
rumor of all sorts regarding her disappearance that its very
difficult to separate the facts from the chaff.
