It ended up being far more involved than I first thought. What kept me going was that I paid a pretty decent amount of money for radio despite the partially defective display and I was mighty determined to see the project through.

But the rest of the radio worked fine, so I programmed an Arduino to act as an I2C bus slave to replace the existing LCD driver chips and then drove a graphics display to recreate the original display, except with a bit more information like battery voltage. The project was a success, the radio looks great, better than the original, but was an enormous amount of work.
