They did and they do. As I just told Jim, I corrected the error the next
day but there is no way on a reflector to un-ring the bell.

I have the same impression. I read something recently about
how these batteries were assembled but don't remember where.
Maybe on the web. However a google search for lantern batteries
turned up

both D and F cells.
Also:

which has dimensions. F cells are about half way down.
