Yes, that's correct. Ammonium chloride ("sal ammoniac" in oldspeak) is
the electrolyte in carbon-zinc batteries. It may very well be that a
little marketing effort went into deliberately confusing the public into
thinking that "zinc chloride" was something different (and perhaps
better), but it's all the same thing.
