[ARC5] Vibrator Power Supplies

I've had one experience with vibrator power supply transformers on 60 HZ AC. At the TRW swap meet in the early 80's I picked up a UHF RCA Carfone for $1.00. It had a couple of large power transformers designed to allow operation on either 6V or 12VDC

I used the transformers to make a 12VDC DC power supply by hooking up the secondary as primary on the AC line. It worked, but the output voltage dropped off rather too much at higher current levels. I don't know if that was a consequence of the type of transformer or the regulation circuit.

For an automobile application I suspect that the lower cost of the 60 HZ transformers might tend to make them preferable. But the aircraft power supply may be designed to reduce weight and have a higher operating frequency.
