I think the original purpose of this inverter was to run a UPS.Otherwise I see no reason to use a low frequncy ironn core transformer.Don't let the low frequency lull you into believing it will not have harmonic issues. It's still a square wave drive.
I have one that runs at about 100khz full dc/dc. Everything fits easily in the palm of my hand. I think it is a flyback boost type.

300W capacity.  Get a center-tapped transformer, drive it with one of these and away you go.  We got some cool toys these days.
