There's Model Rocketry, which consists of buildinga model kit and then launching it with a solid rocket motor about the size of aroll of pennies; it's like CB radio.  Then there is Amateur Rocketry, inwhich people build their own rocket motors - or even engines - and launchrockets that require FAA approval and suitable NOTAMS, usually way out inthe Mojave Desert - its like Dave Stinson.  Then there is Modern Rocketry,which has 27 engines and scared my dog at 15:45 lastTuesday.
 
I have an old friend who is deeply into AmateurRocketry and lives out in the desert inCA.
