There's Model Rocketry, which consists of building a model kit and then launching it with a solid rocket motor about the size of a roll of pennies; it's like CB radio. Then there is Amateur Rocketry, in which people build their own rocket motors - or even engines - and launch rockets that require FAA approval and suitable NOTAMS, usually way out in the Mojave Desert - its like Dave Stinson. Then there is Modern Rocketry, which has 27 engines and scared my dog at 15:45 last Tuesday.

I have an old friend who is deeply into Amateur Rocketry and lives out in the desert in CA.
