And therein lies the salient point.  At the time, it was plentiful and the mind-set present today had not remotely arrived.  I admit guilt of installing an S- meter on a '348 receiver.  I can only say that thank heaven there was enough of it that we can still find good examples still.  But, to the books, they are references to un-do the handiwork of yore and as make-do manuals  at times.Jeep K3HVG

This MIL equipment was hardly an artifact in 1948 and well into early 60s, when people were converting them. 
Just my .02 worth.
