The Stinson L-5 "Sentinel" was a late comer in WWII. My first flight was in an L-5 in CAP, circa 1957.K3HVG

I am assuming that by “L-4 and L-5 Spotter Birds” you mean aircraft similar to the Piper Cub, one of the safest aircraft ever built (it could just barely kill you). I’ve seen pictures of these aircraft with BC-659 radios rigged inside the back of the crew compartment, mostly with a battery hook up configured from parts from the issues battery case ( to save both bulk and weight) and with a wind powered generator fixed between the front landing gear legs ( which the pilots hated because the radio could not then be powered when the aircraft was on the ground ). It makes sense that the Pipers were fit with this radio - simple set up, light weight, simple operation and crystal controlled ( no messing around with a VFO ).
