I recently got my ARC-5 (ARA CBY-46105) receiver going. I was amazed at how
the band noise came up when a carrier came on. It's so much like a squelch
that I can only assume it's designed like that. The set has plenty of
sensitivity, but the quietness when no carrier is present is not like how I
remember from decades ago. Can anyone explain this? Anyone experiencing the
same?
The receiver has only the usual BFO switch, RF/IF gain pot, and headphone
jack in the front panel, and 12V heater rewire. Using the orig audio output
transformer, terminated in 560 ohm and feeding a high impedance amplified
speaker from an old computer.
