Congrats on the repair!
Do you have a link to a datasheet for the NTE multiplier you used? I'd
be curious to see how much it differs from the stock multiplier you
replaced. That price sure is pretty attractive, in any case.
As to a series resistor, it won't do much good. Also be aware that
ordinary resistors arc over with a few hundred volts across them. HV
resistors are physically long to distribute the total voltage over a
large distance to keep the peak field below arc-over threshold.
The Tek scopes all regulate the HV, so as long as the multiplier factor
is close to (but no smaller than) the original, the voltage should come
out fine. (Assuming the feedback pickoff point is not at some
intermediate position in the multiplier chain.)
