The USAAF oxygen mask in use early in WWII was the A-8, which fitted over the crewmember's nose and left the mouth area clear. It featured a rebreather bag that opened and closed. Obviously it could no accommodate a microphone. The A-8 was still in use in the 1970's for medevac aircraft where injuries prevented the fitting of a regular face mask.

Thus either a throat mike or a hand mike had to be used with the A-8 mask.

The A-14 was the face mask used in WWII that covered the nose and mouth and could accommodate a microphone internal to the mask.

My first USAF assignment was to OC-ALC in the mid-70's where my desk was next to the AFLC oxygen mask expert.

By the way, Fair Radio Sales Co has the HS-30 rubber M-300 earpieces for $4.00
