Every so often I suggest using a Sola type constant voltage
transformer to regulate power to radio receivers. I always gets sneered
at. Sola transformers provide very well regulated voltage and will
absolutely get rid of drift do to filament voltage variation. The
complaints that they put out lot of harmonics was true only for the very
early ones, most later CVT put out quite acceptably pure sine waves.
They are somewhat noisy but can be muffled. They also tend to run hot.
They are also fairly heavy but we are dealing with boat anchors here.
CVTs have some interesting properties, for one they shut down if the
output is shorted. They are also very good filters for junk on the power
line. Used ones are not too expensive but make sure it works. CVTs are
dependent on the capacitor in them and I think can develop some
mechanical problems, however, if the output voltage is as rated they are
usually OK.
