I wouldn't call that cheating; I'd call it keeping one's sanity.
My receivers on my 274N are stock -- I have not built a Q5'er nor have I
done the mods in ER by Jeep. 20 KHz Bandwidth can be a challenge. Using
the receivers as they are for DXCC would be tough.
I've been using a T-19 and T-22 with a BC-348Q, and I've been thinking of
pairing up the transmitters with my an HQ-120-X that I restored last
year; I think that would make a nice vintage DX setup -- although not
authentic.
