[ARC5] "Rare" (was: Any difference in...)

The ATA/ARA was the original Navy set, so it was obviously made in smaller
quantities than the SCR-274-N.. SCR-274-N was a copy of the Navy set with a
few minor changes. Besides the differing output impedance, the Signal
Corps didn't buy the 1.5 to 3.0 MC receiver or the 2.1 to 3.0 transmitter. And
at least back in the middle of the last Century, what was plentiful did tend
to vary with what you lived near to. However, most of the sets hve been
through two of three owners since they were originally surplused out. So it
isn't much true any more.

There were two original manuals on the ATA/ARA, one printed in 1940 and the
other in 1942. I sold the 1940 one to Hue more than 30 years ago. I only
have one original of the 1942 one. But I do sell a reprint of it. Along
with reprints of, as of tonight, 622 other manuals.

One reason that the ATA/ARA is Scarce (or Uncommon) is that far fewer of
them were made. Total Wartime production of the SCR-274-N was in the vicinity
of 80.000 to 85,000. Available production records list only the four
transmitters but if one assumes that the spares count was maybe 10%, and make
some assumptions about which transmitters were flown most, you get numbers in
that vicinity. By contrast, the Navy may have bought 8000 to 10,000
ATA/ARA's. Or maybe even less, as the set was replaced by AN/ARC-5 circa 1943.

P.S., please sign all posts.
