Thanks to Hue, Mike and Mike for this info.
Disclaimer: I am a fan of and advocate for
the SCR-183.

Thanks for making the C-184 information available. The C-184 works with
transmitters BC-AE-230 and later (except BC-AF-230, which used the similar
C-182). The standard crystal frequency is 4495 kHz.

Speaking of the BC-AF-230:
By the time of the BC-AE models, the SCR-183 transmitter designs had pretty
much been set, notwithstanding variations in control and sidetone, etc.
It's curious that Western Electric's first dabble in SCR-183, the
SCR-AF-183, would be a "throw-back" to the early, first design with all its
flaws. I think the W.E. engineers must have known this, because they
devised an exclusion device to prevent earlier and later coils to be used
with BC-AF-230. I have a -AF transmitter here and it looks like the first
230, right down to the stack of paper coil charts. No coil for it, of
course :-D.
Any speculations about why they would have done this?
Intended as an "export" model??
