Brooke:
There is no article on the Phillips Screw but a full page advertisements in late WWII issues of Aviation magazine. And it is clear that the screw is intended for use in powered screwdrivers in manufacturing. If you have ever tried to use a regular flat blade screw versus a Phillips head in a power screwdriver you can appreciate that application
There was also a screw called the Reed Prince that looked like a Phillips head but is not. You will tear the head up if you try to use a Reed Prince screwdriver on a Phillips or vice versa. I have one Reed Prince screwdriver in my toolbox, with the head wrapped in tape to prevent inadvertent use. Reed Prince screws were used on some aircraft to secure fabric to metal wings. I suspect the poor reputation that Phillips screws had 40 years ago was due in part to Reed Prince and Phillips getting mixed up.
What do you get when you mix Milk of Magnesia and Vodka? A Phillips Screwdriver.
