I never knew that but had just been assuming that it was just early planned
obsolescence. Although the Pozidrive is still a little better, you can
defeat the "torque-out" at least mostly by taking your Phillips screwdriver to
the fine grit wheel on your bench grinder and removing a few thou from the
tip. As supplied, most if not all screwdrivers bottom in the screw head on
the tip, not on the four driver blades. If you stick the screwdriver into
the screw head and rotate the driver back and forth, it will rotate slightly.
Grind enough off of the tip to eliminate this rotation and the tendency to
spin in the screw head (usually ruining both driver and screw) is greatly
reduced.
