There is a specific inductance that will tune with the trimmers near 12 o'clock corresponding to the dial , but finding that exact mix is easier said than done.Been there...The method that has been a theme here and in various old tech manuals is the 1/3 , 2/3 dial tuning points. the caps are used for the high end and the coils for the low end . You have to go back and forth until one no longer detunes the other. I'm not sure if it's described in the ARC-5 manuals or not.Messing with the coils is that last resort, because now you have two variables instead of one.
I hope that made at least some sense...
The thing to remember is that there is ONE unique balance of L and C that will do linear tuning corresponding to the dial.. Any other combo will be non-linear.

First- How did you set the frequency for the
BFO and how did you align the IF?
Second- Look around the nut that holds the dial
on the front of the radio. Somewhere next to
the nut should be pin- usually covered in black
fixative paint- which goes through the dial and
into the hub on the capacitor to which the dial
is bolted. If this pin is missing and the dial has
rotated out of position, no amount of alignment
will work. If you don't see the pin, unbolt the
dial. You should see the hole in the hub and
the hole in the dial. A mid-diameter sewing
needle can substitute. Re-align once the dial
is in the right position.
If these aren't the problem,
send me your mailing address and I"ll send
you a known-good coil set to try.
