On this page -  http://aafradio.org/docs/Command_Set_Test.html   -  you
will see a test set I-85-A (for testing transmitters) and below it a
unit (I-85-B) is mentioned.
Looking at these, it is clear that the  last character does NOT denote
a minor revision, but a completely  different item, with a different
function.  To answer your "Q" -  I have no answer to your question.
