Very cool! The transmitter looks to be a homebrew clone of a Central
Electronic phasing exciter, or maybe a W2EWL rig with some enhancements
- the B&W 2Q4 audio phasing network can be seen in the lower-left
corner, behind the chopped-down command set VFO chassis. The amp looks
like a pair of 811As with 816 rectifiers and screen regulation so they
could run class AB1 with low level drive from the exciter. A classic
setup for vintage SSB homebrew, too bad they were stored in such nasty
conditions, but they'd clean up and put a good signal on the air even
today. The radio club where I got my license had a homebrew 75 meter
transceiver that I think was a unique design by the chief engineer from
a TV station, but what I remember for sure about it was that it had a
command set tuning capacitor and dial.
Several commercial SSB transmitters including the Lakeshore Phasemasters
and Gonset GSB-100 used command set components as they were available
cheaply and provided excellent performance. And of course the BC-458
conversion was the most common VFO in use back in that era, either in
it's native trim or inside one of the dress cabinets sold by Central
Electronics.
