[ARC5] Yes; I can say...

In high school, I was a member of Army MARS.  At the time, there were no "frequency stability" regulations, etc.  There were several "net" frequencies that were far enough away from the amateur radio bands and most "normal" amateur radio equipment could not be used on those frequencies.  Especially for the CW nets, there were quite a few ARC-5 / SCR-274N transmitters that were used.  I know that I used a BC-457 for such operation.

Again in high school, I used a BC-459 transmitter, with the 1625 tubes removed from the set, as a VFO for my DX-20 for 6-meter operation.  Yes, the DX-20 can be modified to use on 6-meters with a single wire and 1 solder connection.  The 6-meter operation can be "switched" in, and out, by inserting and removing the end of the wire from between the turns of the final amplifier coil.  I wrote my very first magazine article about this modification as a junior, in high school, in early 1961.  Wayne Green, at 73 Magazine paid me $30 for an article that took up 2/3rds of a page in the old, small sized, magazine format.

The "crime" was that, due to lack understanding
or even the desire to understand the design and
proper operation of these radios, 90%+ of these
"improvements" were never completed and if they
were, the sets operated poorly and were discarded
at the first chance to get a "commercial" rig.  That
"handbook" modification of so-called "ARC-5"
transmitters was an awful mod- a kludge and
was responsible for the destruciton thousands
of them, including by *me* when I was young.
If that "modification" was so good, why were
QSOs with them so rare?
Oh, there were the CE rigs.  I'll give you that
one exception.  But the stand-alone transmitters?
