I can verify what Jeepp says relative to use of aircraft radios
as beacons. The 21st Air Force Combat Crew Manual, reprinted
under the title, "How to Fly the B-29 Superfortress" says that at
least one aircraft per squadron will have 11 pretuned channels on
the ART-13, with the 11th channel to be in the 200 - 600 KC band
or the 500-1500 KC band, to be used as a radio homing aircraft in
air-to-air homing for Assembly purposes, target directors, or
air-sea rescue purposes.

All absolutely true. And, respectfully, irrelevant
to the current discussion.
Yes; powerful liaison sets with trailing antennas
were used as DF beacons. But why on
God's good Earth would they then produce a
Command Set with the TN-6, designed to
match a short antenna, to do such a job??
There is no Indication the TN-6 was ever intended
for a long trailing antenna. The low-power
MF Command Sets with their
short, fixed antennas have a tiny fraction
of the ERP of an ART-13 or BC-375
in MF service. It makes no sense, unless
the MF ARC-5s were designed for the exact
same service as every other Command Set:
Short-range tactical communication for the Pilot's use.
I still hold that is the most likely purpose of these sets.
