I can verify what Jeepp says relative to use of aircraft radios as beacons. The 21st Air Force Combat Crew Manual, reprinted under the title, "How to Fly the B-29 Superfortress" says that at least one aircraft per squadron will have 11 pretuned channels on the ART-13, with the 11th channel to be in the 200 - 600 KC band or the 500-1500 KC band, to be used as a radio homing aircraft in air-to-air homing for Assembly purposes, target directors, or air-sea rescue purposes.

Use of those low frequencies obviously allowed used of the ARN-7 Radio Compass equipment for air-to air- homing.

Also, the aircraft were equipped with the CRN-1 single tube battery powered transmitter that sent out a CW signal in the 1400 -1750 KC range, with automatic coding sent 180 times a minute interrupted at 30 sec intervals by a single code letter which may be M, Q, X, K O, or Y. This was a life raft item.
