[ARC5] Weird BC-453-B issue

This is the strangest problem I've ever seen!.The radio did not look overly modified other than for 12V HEATERS.It need the .22 uf can replaced, but othen that it appeared to be "active" when i touched the antenna post.
Put a 10 microvolt modulated signal in, but got no tone. I flip to CW and I get a a tone which reacts in a sort of normal way when I move the dial.. I did give me a hull! Still no tone.
Tried injecting the IF . Got nothing at 85 Khz , but got a strong response on 135 and 144 Khz! . There isn't a whole lot of latitude in the tuning ( think they are mini air caps). How can they be that far off????? I used  270 pf series cap with and without the grid cap attached. 

I was going to open the 1st IF can to see what was going on, but the seal was still intact.
I think this guy may have done something strange.
Anybody ever come across something like this?
