I have found that lacquer thinner (the cheapest you can find) will clean almost anything. Use it outdoors and do not get any on painted surfaces or plastic. It is great for cleaning the WW-II grease that has turned to wax out of dynamotor bearings (before you run the dynamotor).

I use Break Free CLP for almost all lubricating that requires oil unless it is really delicate - like a watch. It works in all but sub-zero temperatures. Shake well before using and use sparingly. It doesn’t take much.

I read somewhere a few days ago that split gears should not be lubricated but I can’t find the reference so take that with a grain of salt until you do the research.

Nearly foolproof method: Use hot air gun at 150 deg F on backlash plates, remove heat and spray WD40 on the plate faying surfaces. I’ve saved lots of expensive race car parts using this method. May have to repeat several times. NO OPEN FLAMES…..
