I recently read a very interesting book, "Bombers Versus Battleships" that addresses not only aircraft attacks against ships in WWII but also the defenses the ships employed.

The book states that in Nov 1941 the RN carriers Indomitable, Formidable, and Illustrious were all being repaired at Norfolk Navy Yard in Virginia. While there the British were able to get together and discuss how to handle fighter direction for defense of their ships and "more importantly, they were also able to obtain efficient voice radio sets from the Americans." It's not clear if that refers to aircraft or ship radios, or both.

Also the RN made the decision to fit their carriers with Type 281 radar sets, which were the first the RN had that were equipped with Plan Position Indicators (that is, CRT displays) and that was a big help in fighter direction tasks.

The book also mentions that for much of the war the Japanese relied mainly on Morse Code to direct their fighters in defense of their ships.
