    Some people used telephone magnetos for fishing. Drop leads 
overboard and crank. Electrocutes the fish. I think this is illegal most 
places.
    When I was a kid we spent our summers in rural Michigan where they 
still had magneto telephones.  Each phone had a couple of No.6 cells in 
the bottom. My memory is that someone would come out a couple of times a 
year to replace the cells. Party line with coded ringing, it was an 
Onsted number but I have long ago forgotten the ring code. Proper 
etiquette was to listen briefly before cranking to ring the operator or 
another number but lots of people "rubbered". Actually, several people 
could get on at once for a sort of conference call. Wasn't supposed to 
be done but was.  I don't know how long magneto telephones persisted in 
rural communities.
