Some people used telephone magnetos for fishing. Drop leads
overboard and crank. Electrocutes the fish. I think this is illegal most
places.
When I was a kid we spent our summers in rural Michigan where they
still had magneto telephones. Each phone had a couple of No.6 cells in
the bottom. My memory is that someone would come out a couple of times a
year to replace the cells. Party line with coded ringing, it was an
Onsted number but I have long ago forgotten the ring code. Proper
etiquette was to listen briefly before cranking to ring the operator or
another number but lots of people "rubbered". Actually, several people
could get on at once for a sort of conference call. Wasn't supposed to
be done but was. I don't know how long magneto telephones persisted in
rural communities.
