Part of the fun of using this old gear is dealing with all the problems that
originally plagued them. Much more fun than trying to make them behave like
the un-repairable hightech stuff we get these days. While I'm not a purest,
I prefer to use things the way they were designed to be used.

Isn't it modern practice to put a solid state diode across relay DC
energizing coils? Given electron tubes' higher voltages and thus their
resistance to spikes do we not need to worry about that?
