[ARC5] USAF Museum Virtual Tour

Mike:
I guess that is possible. But a disliked feature of that model of the
Skyraider was that they usually flew it with only one pilot, who had a lot
more trouble seeing out the right side of the airplane than with the H and J
models, that had just the single seat bubble canopy. If they had put the HF
control box on the right side the pilot would not have been able to reach
it.
Of course, the fact the A-1E had two seats up front is the reason one of
those, rather than an H or J, is in the USAF Museum. That particular
airplane was the one being flown by Maj Bernie Fisher, when another
Skyraider was shot down over the A-Shau Special Forces camp. Despite heavy
ground fire and his own airplane being hit and losing its hydraulics he
landed and picked up the other pilot, and got the Medal of Honor for it.
I have an airborne SSB transceiver someone gave me. It apparently is
crystal controlled, 10 channels, I think and thus the control box is quite
small and simple (and available for only $164.10 on ebay). So conceivably
it might require very little room in the cockpit if it was one like that.
I wonder about the FM comm capability. Given the CAS mission that
particular airplane was supporting comm with the ground troops would have
been essential. However, while it has an FM switch on the center console,
it appears that the FM position on the intercom wafer switch has been taped
over.
Happy Memorial Day!
