And the designator for Orlando International remains MCO (for McCoy).

Our cross-country Navigator School flight went there. We were supposed
to cross to Kindley AF in Bermuda and back, but that got cancelled. RATS!

I guess we can assume that one used was the
tower freq for Muroc. I would guess that the XS-1 project had its own freq
for air to air as well.

Another bit of trivia is the radio used as the
ground station for the X-1 in the movie, '"The Right Stuff" I believe was
an RT-68/GRC.

The first flights of the XS-1 actually were at
Pinecastle AAF, later known as McCoy AFB, now Orlando International
Airport. At that time it was a semi-closed base. But those were all
unpowered glide flights.

This would be an interesting bit of
trivia -- the frequencies used especially for Chuck Yeager's record flight.
The information may be lost to history though.

VHF ARC-5 being used in the later X-1A, but it appears> it was used in the very first X-1 airplanes as well.Lighter system than the ARC-1 or ARC-3,more capable and more reliable than the olderARC-4
or SCR-522.And during design, it's easier to find three small
spaces than it is to find one great big space.
