FYI, there is an article in the "CQ Command Sets Handbook" about converting a 190-550 kc receiver to the broadcast band by removing turns from the RF and IF coils to change the tuning range and the IF to match the 520-1500 receivers.  The result was intended to produce a broadcast receiver to be used in an automobile, so I don't think it references the BFO coil.  Not sure if anything is said about padder caps.
If I could lay my hands on my copy of this book right now, I'd check re the padders and BFO; but the book is on line, maybe in BAMA under Military.  Note, this is not the same book as the User's Guide to Aircraft Radio Corp. Receivers.
