[ARC5] Can Old Crystals Be Restored?

Earlier this week I was trying to figure out if a couple of 1 MHZ crystals were working - one had worked and then the oscillation stopped after a couple of minutes. With the other crystal the oscillator was dead.
I wonder if anyone has a design for a crystal tester? I was very impressed with the 2nd LO used in the National NC-270 when I converted a NC-155 to a crystal 2nd LO. I also was very impressed with the 7404 TTL crystal controlled oscillator I built back in the mid-70's. Both worked the first time.
I am always impressed with things that work the first time for me. In contrast, Edison said he did not trust such devices.
I'd like to build a stand alone duplicate of the NC-270 2nd LO to use as a crystal tester and general purpose oscillator. Has anyone done anything like that?
Thanks,
Wayne
