It's been a long long time since I had hands on one of these sets.  So 
they turn out to be more automatic than I thought.  However you'll see on
page 2-6 of the T.O. that for the ARC-36 the frequencies for the channels
shared by two frequencies must not be too far apart.  And in the receiver
there are those thumbwheels that must be set to the approximate frequency
for each of the 8 channels, so all the crystals for one of the 8 channels
must be close in frequency by a certain amount.
