[ARC5] Ceramic Versus Phenolic

Hello Wayne,

I can think of two reasons:
1.. logistics, is, what was available at the time of manufacture
2.. humidity vs Voltage; a glazed ceramic socket will absorb very little water compared with phenolic; so, at high altitude in a non-pressurised aircraft, there will be lots of condensation, with the possibility of high-Voltage flashover.

Any of y'all know if there is a rhyme or reason why sometimes ceramic octal tube sockets are used in WWII vintage equipment and sometimes its phenolic tube sockets?

I would think that ceramic would be superior but does the application matter as to which is used?

Somewhere I have the remains of a WWII vintage BC-357 or something like that and it has ceramic tube sockets. Most equipment seems to use phenolic ones.

Thanks,

Wayne
