which suggests the units of micro-jars, nano-jars and pico-jars although keeping with the old style terminology perhaps the latter would be more accuraately refered to as a mmJ ie micro-micro-jar

My best guess (a scientific, wild eyed guess) was about the Leyden jars.
I think I remember reading there was a standard size and that would lead
to a more or less "standard" unit of capacitance that they called a
'jar'. Maybe those jars were in pints or gallons just like today's radios.
