My personal use of the words of course are interchangeable, however I find I
use the term capacitor more often with small values and variables, and the

My best guess (a scientific, wild eyed guess) was about the Leyden jars.
I think I remember reading there was a standard size and that would lead to
a more or less "standard" unit of capacitance that they called a 'jar'.
Maybe those jars were in pints or gallons just like today's radios.
