I think there is a shred of truth to the religious aspect, but not in
direct connection to the emperor. The Japanese believed divine
intervention in the form of a typhoon saved them from a Mogul naval
invasion back in the 1200's. The leadership played up this
we-are-the-chosen-ones and god-is-on-our-side thing (e.g. Kamikaze pilots)
such that even towards the very end the people were led to believe that
divine intervention would save them. Ironically, a huge freak typhon
struck the US fleet a month or two after the Japanese surrender. It caused
massive damage to our ships.
