An improvement of that technique is to scan pages with mixed text and 
photos twice, once in monochrome with grass cutter turned on (to get rid of the 
yellow to brown background) and again in gray scale with grass cutter either 
on or off, depending upon which looks better.  Then cut and past the gray 
scale photo onto the B&W text page.  The photo usually looks the same, the 
rest of the page is clean and sharp, and the file size is significantly 
reduced.  I've been doing it this way since 1999 when my first Zerox multi-function 
machine replaced the earlier Xerox mechanical copier.
