I used to read Audio magazine in the 70's and the masthead proclaimed themselves to be "Successor to Radio". I think I have seen a copy of Audio on a bookshelf in the last couple years. I don't know what the masthead says now. Audio Engineering is unrelated to this discussion.


Richard Cowan founded "CQ" in 1945, says so right on the cover of their Anthology book of 1952. The only connection between it and "Radio" might be an overlapping of some staff members who worked both rags.


Radio was not taken over so much as it collapsed. Readership fell during the war, did not recover.


The "Radio Handbook" was often, and sometimes still is, called the "West Coast Handbook"

    Curious. Radio started out as "Pacific Radio News" and became
"Radio" in 1922. "Pacific Radio News" is on
American Radio History.  "Radio" was taken over about 1947 and became CQ
and Audio Engineering.  I am not sure of the details.  "Radio" published
the well known "Radio Handbook".  I thought "Radio" was on the American
Radio History site but couldn't find it so I guess I imagined it. It was
sort of a West Coast competitor to QST.
