I have a PMR-6A and it works pretty well, but the lack of an RF Gain control is a definite handicap on strong SSB signals.  You could try putting a variable cap, say a 365 pf broadcast type, in series with the antenna and that would help some.  There isn't really any room for adding another control to the front panel unless it was maybe a coaxial dual pot -- good luck finding one the right value(s) today -- with the AF gain control, or maybe if you dare, mounting one on the side of the chassis.  Not rocket science for the circuit mods, but the mechanics may prove challenging.  Space is at a premium.
My PMR-6A is sometimes paired with an RME 6 and 2 meter mobile converter, tunable type which has an IF output of around 1550 kc.  I don't run them mobile!  (In any car made after 1959, where would you put them?)
