THat was back in the dark ages of semiconductor design. Bet the circuit has has no thermal stability at all due to it's lack of compenastion. You probably could have a nice stable one using nothing more than a mosfet, op amp and a few passive components.You might even get off easier if you use an electret mike. ( high output).

4 transistors, two caps, two resistors and a mic jack.
Neat.
Maximum modulation percentage is 75% which is completely adequate.
